On 30 April 2025, the beaches of the Island of Elba hosted the latest edition of Mare Pulito. Once again, it involved qualified scuba divers and students in a joint effort to collect litter and clean up the beaches and seabeds.
Indeed, active participation by professional scuba divers from 20 diving centres on Elba, taking on the role of true figureheads, once again proved invaluable in teaching and promoting the diving culture during this edition. Through their work 'on the ground', these centres have become ambassadors for the principles of ocean literacy, making them for all intents and purposes a virtuous example of ocean education accessible to everyone, perfectly aligned with UNESCO's Ocean Decade activities.
Each year, the initiative has benefitted from the active
contribution of the Marevivo foundation which, for
four decades, has been committed to protecting the sea and its
resources through national and international actions and campaigns
informing and raising awareness among the public.
Students from the Sandro Pertini state comprehensive
school in Portoferraio, Carducci comprehensive school in Porto
Azzurro and Giusti comprehensive school of Marciana and Marciana
Marina also participated in the day, getting actively
involved in various areas of the island, from San Giovanni and Le
Ghiaie to Portoferraio and La Pianotta beach in Porto Azzurro, from
the port of Margidore to Capoliveri and La Foce beach in Marciana
Marina, and from the port and beach of Marciana Marina to Procchio
beach, Marciana.
Thanks to these activities, over 350 kg of litter was collected from the beaches and then disposed of with the kind contribution of ESA.
The event was also supported by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the Port Authority, the Diving Corps of the Financial Police, the Municipalities of Portoferraio, Porto Azzurro, Marciana Marina, Campo nell'Elba, Marciana and Capoliveri, the waste management company ESA, Blu Oceans, Vittoria Assicurazioni and the Padi Awareness Foundation.
