Economic transition and the Blue Economy: the energy of the sea

The second day of SEIF focused on the Economic Transition and the Blue Economy, emphasising how respect for the environment also enables production activities to operate more healthily and efficiently.

During the workshop entitled "L'Economia del Mare" moderated by journalist Antonio Piemontese, the evening's guests, Stefano Ciafani (Chairman of Legambiente), Carlo Montalbetti (Symbola Organising Committee), Barbara Bonciani (Councillor for the Port of the Municipality of Livorno and the Il Porto delle Donne project), Francesca Biondo (Director of Federpesca) and Luciano Serra (Chairman of ASSONAT), took stock of the many activities related to the marine sector, from sustainable fishing to the production of renewable energy from the sea.

It is estimated that wind energy and thermal energy from waves and tides could generate a quarter of the EU's electricity by 2050: sustainable energy opportunities that could have a huge impact both on the environment and on consumers' pockets. This is why it is crucial to overcome the contradictory approach of those who complain about the impact of offshore wind power on the landscape but do not take action against oil and gas extraction platforms or power plant chimney stacks.

Finally, a special mention for the students of the Marciana Marina lower secondary school who, with The Crazy Team group, presented their marine turbine project as part of the Oltre La Robotica Award.
